Supporting Mental Health Across Australia

Mental health challenges can affect anyone, at any stage of life. Professional registered counsellors play an important role in providing a safe, confidential and supportive environment where people can talk openly about what they are experiencing. From stress, anxiety and relationship difficulties to grief, trauma and major life changes, counselling can help people better understand their experiences and develop practical strategies to move forward.

Early Support Can Make a Difference

Access to the right support at the right time can be an important part of maintaining mental wellbeing and preventing difficulties from becoming more overwhelming. Counsellors can provide early intervention, emotional support and practical guidance, while also recognising when someone may need additional or specialised care. Their role complements the wider Australian mental health system and can help people take an important first step towards seeking support.

Professional, Ethical and Person-Centred Care

Professional standards help promote quality, ethical practice, appropriate training and safe care. The Australian Government’s National Standards for Counsellors and Psychotherapists outline expectations around education and training, professional practice, ethics, competency, diversity and inclusion, and quality assurance. Professional counsellors are an important part of Australia’s broader mental health workforce, helping individuals, families and communities build resilience, improve wellbeing and navigate life’s challenges.
